Conceptual Office Environment
- Kansas City, MO
Working with local Kansas City developer, 3D Development, the BRR team conceptualized a design to elevate a future office space in the former Kansas City Star building, which is listed on the National Historic Registry. The office will accommodate roughly 170 teammates with room for potential future growth.
The design leverages the building’s historic character while introducing a contemporary office framework. The space spans two floors with an existing skylight at the heart of the project, situated over the breakroom and lounge spaces, flooding the interior of the project with daylight. Details in the ornamental handrails and light fixtures are subtle nods to the building’s past. An existing radio tower is hidden at the back of the space and extends three floors to a private observation deck that provides panoramic views of the city.
The design concept focuses on creating an open office environment that also fosters collaboration; the floor plan includes enclosed offices, conference rooms and informal coworking zones. Lounge areas, break spaces and touchdown work points are integrated throughout to support a range of work styles and encourage interaction in both structured and casual settings.
Ultimately, the design pulls inspiration from the space’s past and combines it with a modern design language.
