In collaboration with Esperanza Real Estate Investments, Inc., and AWG’s Design Source Group, BRR Architecture’s design of the Uptown Grocery Co. in Edmond, Oklahoma was recently awarded first place in the ‘Overall Store Design: New Construction, Over 50,000 Square Feet’ category of Progressive Grocer’s 2012 Store Design Contest.
Progressive Grocer delivers total market coverage and has been in the retail food industry for almost 90 years. The online and print publication works with chain supermarkets, regional and local independent grocers, supercenters, wholesale distributors and manufacturers to analyze and report on trends in the grocery industry.
Uptown Grocery owners Hank and Susan Binkowski had a very specific vision for the one-of-a-kind market, from the warehouse exterior to the store’s upscale, signature grocery shopping experience. Oversized photos of Oklahoma history greet customers as they enter Uptown Grocery, whose produce department houses 140+ organic products. Uptown Grocery’s remarkable floor plan includes the Floral Fusion floral department, The Great Grains Bakery, The Butcher Block meat department, a gourmet prepared foods area, a 90-seat café and cooking demonstration space, and sushi, cheese and salad bars.
Uptown Grocery employs approximately 250 individuals and is one of the largest commercial buildings constructed in Edmond in the last five years. The Edmond Economic Development Authority reported that project construction generated approximately $20.5 million in economic output, and the store is predicted to bring more than $2.6 million in annual economic impact for the community.
